Abstract Lack of data inhibits informed decision-making and is a critical challenge in developing countries, many which are under-resourced financial, technical institutional capacity to collect analyse the required data. This limits countries’ ability achieve development goals keeps them dependent on provision external resources. Development initiatives often treat building research as two separate tracks development. While efforts have been made health sector combine these through project-based learning, this approach relatively unexplored water by its inter-sectoral nature stands benefit significantly from more collaborative solution-oriented strategy. Capacity Building Research (CBtR) facilitates collection analysis local researchers, mentored international experts, strengthening produce credible evidence able inform sustainability-related decision-making. Five case studies piloting CBtR discussed here evaluated criteria Dutch Strategy Evaluation Protocol framework. shows be long-term strategy that requires cross-disciplinary networks enhance management institutions, likely contributes efficient suitable for decision-makers, leading greater national resilience reduced need support.
